Jill Duggar opens up about her birth story in the new People Magazine cover story, revealing if she had a c-section, and how long she was in labor.
Let’s just say that Israel Dillard’s delivery was pretty drawn-out …
After 70 (yes, seventy, or 7-0) hours of intense labor, Jill and Derick Dillard welcomed their first baby boy April 6, and People reveals what an ordeal it was.
Worth it 100 times out of 100, obviously … but harrowing.
As fans who read celebrity gossip or watch 19 Kids and Counting online know, the mom-to-be hoped for a natural delivery at home in Rogers, Arkansas.
“His birth didn’t go as expected,” Jill says of the events of the past few weeks. “But having him here – it’s worth all of it. I wouldn’t do anything differently.”
The second-oldest daughter born into the Duggar family (after Jana Duggar) didn’t get discouraged as her March 24 due date passed … and passed.
“I told myself first-time moms often go a week and a half over,” says the 23-year-old, who did just that, carrying little Israel to 41 weeks and five days.
At that point, Jill’s water finally broke, but complications followed. Jill tested positive for strep B, a common bacteria that can be transferred from mom to baby.
She began an IV of antibiotics, then after 20 hours in labor – with contractions just one minute apart – and little progression, Jill saw a faint stain of meconium.
The earliest waste of an unborn infant, often a sign of fetal distress, was her cue to head to her local hospital. There, the journey was just beginning …
At the hospital, Jill initially declined Pitocin (a hormone that speeds up labor) and pain medication, but after another 40-plus hours in labor, the baby flipped.
“I was praying to God to give me strength,” she recalls.
“I was really scared and nervous, but I was praying.”
Not only was #BabyDilly in a transverse breech position (sideways and upside down), he started experiencing irregular heart rates and had not descended.
Given her doctors’ concerns, Jill Duggar had a C-section and finally welcomed her long-awaited, heavy-duty 9-lb., 10-oz. baby boy at 11:49 p.m.
All in a day’s work … or three in Jill’s case!
“I love our birth story because it bonded us so well,” says Jill, now resting at home. “I still haven’t changed a single diaper. Derick has been changing them all.”
What a struggle. It’s nice that Jill has such a strong support system in her husband and siblings after going through that, but still. Wow. Just … wow.
Fans of TLC’s hit show can see the birth of Israel David on May 5 in advance of Mother’s Day; last night, the show posted the first Instagram photo of him.
